Today I had a brief catch-up with my former therapist, who I consider a friend these days, and it truly warmed my heart. As someone who values nurturing relationships, it’s important for me to have these check-ins and continue to cultivate connections within my network. During our conversation, the topic of commitment came up.
I’ve always had an interesting relationship with commitment (insert the word “trauma” here). It’s been difficult for me to commit to things, so when I do - I GO ALL IN. This is crucial because the times I’ve committed and not committed in my life have led to noticeably different outcomes.
In this conversation, my friend asked me, “What is your commitment to self?” and it gave me pause. As someone who constantly self-audits, reflects, and strives to be a better version of myself, I realized I hadn’t recently checked in on what I’m actually committing to for myself these days.
To be fully transparent, the past few months have been a rollercoaster. It’s been challenging to find the time to just breathe and reflect for various reasons. But this is something I needed to sit with and make the time.
Reflecting on EVERYTHING that’s happened up until now, I’ve come to a realization: my commitment to self is actually about committing.
Yes, let’s read that again….
I am committing to myself! Simple words, but harder to put into practice (or is it?). I’ve been operating out of a mix of fear, exhaustion and maybe even a little delusion. The universe has been pretty clear, almost yelling at me to see clarity I’ve been avoiding. It’s time to commit to doing what I know I want to do—and more importantly, what I know I can do—and just do it!
It always fascinates me how much becomes clear in the silence.
So, I’ll ask you the same question: What is your commitment to self?
Just some weekly food for thought for you all!
